This little vase is a joyful return to hand building after a long time away from clay. It has many elements from past sculptures and yet it dances, liberated from the serious nature of sculpture and the past. It looks a bit like a teapot, it looks a bit like a canyon wall. The back side looks like a blue chalice. And the blue from the inside runs over the front edge the way waterfalls stain cliff walls in the mountains. This little piece refers to many vessels and the language that comes from pottery – vase, cup, bowl, teapot, lake, valley, mountain, canyon. To me they are all here, speaking up quietly and with joy, depending on which view you are seeing.
